Sara García Alonso, the first Spanish female astronaut from the European Space Agency, will be the star of the next Leer conCiencia event at the Universitat Politècnica de València. It will take place on 2 May at noon in the Nexus building at the UPV.
Sara will present her book Órbitas (Orbits), in which she shares her unique experience and offers insights into how to approach and tackle challenges while also delving into her personal and professional career.
The event is open to the general public and is designed as an open dialogue. Afterwards, the astronaut and molecular biologist at the CNIO will sign copies of her book for anyone interested.
In addition, anyone who does not have a copy of Órbitas and would like to purchase one will be able to do so at a stand set up by the ‘Somnis de paper’ bookshop in Benetússer in the lobby of the Nexus building.
The event is fully booked, so it is no longer possible to reserve a seat for the colloquium. However, if you want Sara García Alonso signs your book, please come by around 1:15 p.m.
Sara García Alonso is the second guest to participate in the Leer conCiencia project at the UPV. The first was the journalist José Luis Sastre, with his book Las frases robadas (Stolen Phrases).
Promoted this year by the UPV, with the support of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, this initiative combines literature, science, dissemination and current affairs in an entertaining and educational way.
In November 2022, the European Space Agency (ESA) selected García as a reserve for its 2022 astronaut promotion. Together with the aeronautical engineer Pablo Álvarez Fernández, they were chosen from more than 22,000 candidates from all over Europe.
In October 2024, she began the first of three two-month astronaut reserve training programmes at the European Astronaut Centre (EAC) in Cologne, Germany.
